Takeaways from Keynote Speaker John O’Leary 2024 HCAOA Conference

Takeaways from Keynote Speaker, John O’Leary, shared by President & Co-Founder of Assistance Home Care, Allen Serfas, at the 2024 Home Care Association of America Conference in Seattle, WA.

Attending John O’Leary’s keynote at the Home Care Association of America Annual Meeting was nothing short of inspiring. John’s story and heartfelt message left me with takeaways that have been resonating ever since, and I’m excited to share them here in hopes that we can spread his message of impact, gratitude, and purpose.

1. Asking “Why Me?” with Gratitude

When life throws us challenges, it’s natural to wonder, “Why me?” But John has a way of flipping this question, encouraging us to ask it with gratitude. Instead of focusing on what’s going wrong, he invites us to see what’s going *right*. Whether it’s the opportunity to make a difference for a client, the joy of a moment with loved ones, or even our ability to lend a listening ear, the “Why me?” question can remind us of our unique position to be of service. It’s a perspective that helps us live with more appreciation, which is a game-changer for anyone in caregiving and beyond.

2. “Who Cares?” – Showing Up for Others

This question hit home for me. John told a story about how one person’s voice of encouragement changed his life, proving how powerful even the smallest acts of kindness can be. “Who cares?” makes us think of the people in our lives who support and inspire us, and it reminds us that we have that same power to show up for others. Whether with family, friends, or clients, caring deeply and intentionally creates connections that last. In home care, where relationships are everything, this is such a powerful reminder to embrace empathy and compassion each day.

3. Asking “What More Can I Do?”

Finally, John challenged us to ask, “What more can I do to make tomorrow better?” This is about finding small ways to serve and grow every day. It doesn’t mean everything will be easy, but it’s about resilience and stepping forward. In the caregiving world, this question feels especially meaningful. Each of us can find ways to improve, whether it’s supporting a family going through a hard time or making sure a client’s day is just a bit brighter. It’s all about leaving a lasting impact, no matter how small the actions may seem.

4.Finding Gratitude in Everyday Moments

Gratitude is at the heart of John’s message, and he emphasized how cultivating it can transform our outlook on life. From early morning sunrises to the people around us, taking a moment to notice and appreciate the beauty in each day makes us happier, healthier, and more connected. And in home care, gratitude for the ability to make a difference is a powerful motivator.

5.Supporting One Another in the Journey

John’s journey was full of people who helped him along the way, reminding us that we’re not alone in our struggles. By showing up for others and accepting support when needed, we create a ripple effect of love and resilience that makes life better for everyone involved. It’s a lesson we can apply within our caregiving community and in our personal lives.
For those of you who have been lucky enough to experience John’s message in person, what stood out most to you? And for everyone, let’s think about this together: What more can we do, as individuals or as a team, to make an impact that resonates beyond our daily roles? Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a major commitment. Let’s spread John’s message by supporting and inspiring one another!
